Janet  Chamberlain

Jan Chamberlain for Library Trustee, 2024

My  family has made Canton our home for over forty years.

My  four children attended the Canton Public Schools from

grades K-12. During those years I volunteered with Boy Scouts,

Girl Scouts, Canton Youth Soccer, the JFK CAPT, and the

high school boosters.

I received my undergraduate degree in elementary education from Gordon College. I earned my  Master’s Degree in special education from Boston College. My teaching career brought me to Georgetown, Lynnfield and the Canton public schools. My last twelve years of teaching were at the John F Kennedy School in Canton, where I taught fifth grade for eleven years. In addition, I acted  as assistant principal for five years, and the school principal  for one year.

Since retirement I have volunteered with the Mass Association of Blind and Visually Impaired, Boston Chinatown Community Center, and as a classroom volunteer in Norwood.

I was elected to my first term as trustee in 2021. I was grateful for the opportunity to serve on the board and learn more about our gem, the heart of our community, our public library.

In my role as a trustee I am also the liaison to the Friends of the Library. In that role, I was part of the working committee that launched the first exciting and successful Comedy Night in 2023 and the first Sip and Shop this past November, 2023.

I served on the trustee sub-committee to update the library’s Strategic Plan and was part of the reading garden study committee. I am now part of the Library Revitalization committee, working on the grass roots fundraising plan for making our facility even more community centered, inside and out. We are adding another chapter to the library’s story.

I am committed to continuing my tenure on the Library Board of Trustees for a second three-year term. The board creates policy, updates past policies, and supports the library director in reviewing budget items, staffing, the condition of the physical plant, and facilitates future goals. I’m committed to moving the library forward in meeting the needs and interests of the Canton community of all ages, gender, and ethnicity. I bring decades of experience in public education to this position. The library, like our school, is a place of learning, exploration and encourages the beginning of  life-long learners.

“Connect, learn and grow” is part  of the Canton Public Library logo. These words exemplify the philosophy of the library . They are also a guiding principle for me as an educator and trustee.

We’re fortunate to have a library for every citizen through programming, resources and the plethora of events offered.

It has been my honor to serve as trustee for the past three years. I respectfully ask for your vote on April 2.
